Expats, Erasmus e Coronavirus: Le opinioni degli stranieri di Palermo

Maria, una studentessa erasmus estone, era da poco arrivata a Palermo a fine febbraio poco prima che cominciasse tutto questo.

Lei ha dichiarato: "I think the timing of this virus is unfortunate for me, because I am doing my Erasmus, but there are a lot bigger problems this virus causes. Anyways, I am happy to be here even the situation is what it is. All we can do is just hope for it to past so we can get back to our normal lives".

(penso di essere stata sfortunata dato che sono qui in Erasmus, ma ci sono problemi molto più gravi che il virus causa. In ogni caso sono felice di poter vivere questa esperienza nonostante la situazione attuale. Tutto quello che possiamo fare è sperare che passerà presto e potremo tornare presto alle nostre vite normali).

Catalina, è una studentessa rumena in erasmus, e ci racconta di come passa le giornate in quarantena: "I am cooking, exercising, reading and studying. Everything at home. I’ve been having online classes for a few weeks now and it is going very well. I think this is a period of forced self discovery that will turn out very well in the end".

(durante le giornate cucino, mi esercito, leggo e studio, tutto a casa. Ho avuto delle lezioni online e l'esperienza sta andando abbastanza bene. Penso che un periodo del genere può aiutare a migliorare se stessi e alla fin fine si possono fare delle scoperte che possono essere d'aiuto per il futuro).

Jane è invece una pensionata americana che ha scelto Palermo per vivere, si è trasferita solo pochi mesi fa e non parla ancora italiano.

Lei ha dichiarato: "We are cooped up, isolated and scared and seeing no end coming soon. I really never got the chance to enjoy Palermo. It would be nice if I can someday but then everthing will be different".

(non ho molto da dire, siamo rinchiusi, isolati e spaventati e non vediamo una fine presto. Non ho ancora avuto la possibilità di godermi a pieno Palermo, sarebbe bello se questo giorno verrà, ma credo che dopo di ciò tutto sarà diverso).

Alina è una ricercatrice russa di 28 anni che sta facendo qui il suo dottorato di ricerca. Ha dichiarato:

"I have a good time on my own and manage to do so many things that I did not have time for before.  I write my PhD thesis every day and even started writing a book. On the other hand, I miss parties with friends (especially going to Vucciria), as well as walking around the city and trips to beautiful places. But I understand that this is only temporary, and we need to be patient. We do it for our and other people’s health and safety. I hope that the pandemia will pass soon, and Palermo will become even more beautiful and joyful as it was before".

(Sto vivendo un buon momento sola riuscendo a trovare il tempo di fare molte cose per le quali prima non avevo tempo. Sto scrivendo la mia tesi di dottorato ogni gorni e ho anche cominciato a scrivere un libro. Dall'altro lato mi mancano gli amici, le feste (specialmente andare in Vucciria) e anche camminare in giro per la città attorno ai bellissimi posti di Palermo. Ma capisco che è solo una cosa momentanea e dobbiamo essere pazienti. Lo facciamo per la nostra salute e la sicurezza delle altre persone. Spero che questa pandemia passi presto e che Palermo diventerà sempre più bella e gioiosa come lo era prima).

Ghyda, una ragazza giordana impegnata nel suo studio specialistico, a Palermo da ben 2 anni ha dischiarato:

"We are trying to do the most in our time all of us are writing our masters thesis, so now we have the time to keep on reading as many articles as we want, online classes , then we do home exercises, then at night we open our bottles of wine and drink and watch movies till we sleep and of course around 6 we check how many people are infected. For the erasmus life i cant say anything luckily, I have been here for a year and a half but I am sad that my last days here are being in quarantine"

(Stiamo provando a dar eil meglio di noi nello scrivere le nostre tesi così al momento abbiamo il tempo di leggere molti articoli, partecipare alle classi online, fare gli esercizi, poi di notte possiamo bere qualcosa a casa e guardare un film fino a quando ci addormentiamo, e certamente alle 18 riceviamo le notizie sui contagiati e le morti del giorno. Sulla vita erasmus posso dire che io, essendo qui da 1 anno e mezzo ho avuto le mie occasioni, ma è certamente triste che debba passare i miei ultimi mesi qui in quarantena).

Anna, tedesca già da due anni a Palermo e impegnata nel corso di studi triennale ci dice:

"I am really shocked about the situation. But in the end I have to say that everything is organised really well, for me , I have my lessons via Skype every day with my laptop so I can even listen to them in bed. Also I feel really save because nobody in this extreme situation is allowed to leave the house and actually it makes me feel even more save. I am German and I would not like to change country at the moment. Also this is THE time to do something together with my flatmates , know more about yourself about who you are and what you would like to do, how to use your free time and maybe even discover a new hobby for yourself. Until now I am really enjoying this time also if I know obviously that the situation is really dangerous and serious. Stay positive and make the best out of it is my advice for everyone!"

(Sono veramente scioccata dalla situazione. Ma alla fine devo dire che tutto è organizzato bene per me, posso seguire le lezioni su Skype ogni giorno dal mio computer così posso anche seguirle dal mio letto. Anche mi sento abbastanza sicura dato che nessuno può lasciare la casa senza un reale motivo. Io sono tedesca e non vorrei essere in Germania in questo momento. Anche questo è il momento per conoscersi meglio con i coinquilini, sapere qualcosa in più su te stesso, chi sei, quello che vorresti fare, come usare il tempo libero e forse scoprire un nuovo hobby. Finora ho passato abbastanza bene questo tempo anche se so che la situazione lì fuori è abbastanza complicata e seria. Siate positivi e prendete il meglio di questo mio consiglio!)

Lloyd è un ragazzo inglese che insegna a Palermo in una scuola di lingue. Nelle ultime settimane si è dovuto abituare ad insegnare online. Ha dichiarato: "It's a very strange time for all, but despite the clearly solumn and disappointing nature of the situation, we are living through a moment of 21st century history. There is a great sense of getting though this together". I hope that the idea behind the quarantine works, although what about people's mental health? This could may be affected".

(è un periodo molto strano per chiunque, ma nonostante la delusione per la natura della situazione, stiamo comunque vivendo un momento storico del XXI secolo. C'è forse un senso nell'andare attraverso questa esperienza tutti insieme. Spero che l'idea della quarantena funzione, altrimento cosa succederebbe nella testa della persone? questo potrebbe segnarle).

Valeria, giovane studentessa ucraina, è delusa dal fatto di non poter avere quel tipo di esperienza che aveva sognato: "When I came to Palermo I noticed how lively the city was. I liked it at once. Everyday I went out somewhere with other Erasmus students. We liked walking along the seashore, the port, we enjoyed the excursions around the city, enjoyed discovering it by ourselves, enjoyed talking to the locals, trying the Sicilian and Italian cuisines and so on. As for me, the best part was that people were relaxed, unlike my country. 

The difference between the life before and after the quarantine was clear. It felt like everything stopped at once. The streets are not that crowded and my favorite Ballarò is closed. Now as all the Erasmus stidents I am sitting at home and just study. It is important for my future profession to get to know the Italian culture and to practise Italian, but during the quarantine it is almost impossible. And I am so upset that a lot of Erasmus students have already left the country, and I am not able to get this intercultural exchange the way it could be".

(Appena arrivata a Palermo ho notato come la città fosse viva. Mi era veramente piaciuta. Ogni giorno uscivo con altri studenti erasmus, camminavamo nella zona del mare, il porto, abbiamo organizzato escursioni giornaliere, conoscendoci, provando prodotti tipici locale. Per me la cosa migliore era che le persone qui sono veramente rilassate, non come nel mio paese. La differenza nello stile di vita tra prima e dopo la quarantena è chiaramente evidente, non c'è più vita e il mio mercato favorito, Ballarò, è chius Ora tutti gli studenti erasmus stanno a casa a studiare. Sarebbe stato importante per la mia vita professionale futura conoscere la cultura italiana e praticare la lingua, ma durante la quarantena questo è quasi impossibile. E sono molto delusa che molti amici sono già partiti e tornati nel proprio paese e non potrò vivere a pieno questa splendida esperienza interculturale che è l'erasmus).

Bruno (anche se non è il suo vero nome, dice che il suo è difficilissimo per italiani) è un ragazzo taiwanese che da un pò di mesi studia in italiano in una scuola di lingue. Se la cava già con l'italiano e ha dichiarato: "Sono una persona che ama la libertà e ama la natura, anche se ora non posso uscire anche non posso fare qualcosa di mi piace, però penso questo è un bellissimo tempo per natura e il mondo,la terra ha bisogno fare pausa,quindi speriamo il virus che lascia a noi di subito,di tutti persone abbiamo bisogno stare a casa, tranquillo e aspettiamo, e rigrazie tutto ancora lavoro per noi il medico,il mercato,la polizia ....e molti,ultimo spero studiare il mio corso di pasticceria sta andando bene,i dolci sono la mia vita".

Nonostante qualche errore in italiano, apprezziamo molto il suo impegno :)
